I recently came across this Collectors Weekly article about Tziporah Salamon and her style sense. Also included in the article is the mention of Ari Seth Cohen’s upcoming book, Advance Style. Cohen’s book, and preluding blog, feature the truly glamorous elderly fashionistas of Manhattan. That got me thinking; fashion seems to have lost something in recent years. Think of the most glamorous women you know of and I mean truly, elegantly, glamorous. How many of them are under 60? Think of the icons: Jackie O., Audrey Hepburn, Coco Channel, Catherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor. Granted they didn’t become icons at age 60, (I think we all have the potential to be fabulous at any age) but their senses of style, which were undeniably intertwined with their public personas, set them apart and have kept them there over the years. I think it can be too easy to discredit the generations before us as they continue to get older but the truth is, you are never too old to be glamorous.

Contrary to popular belief, Hallmark cards did not give birth to Mother’s Day. Instead, the hallmarks of the holiday are spiritual. The ancient Egyptians honored Isis, the goddess known as the Mother of the Pharaohs. The Romans acknowledged Isis, but their main Mother’s Day celebration focused on Cybele, the Great Mother goddess. The earliest European celebration of Mother’s Day paid tribute to the Christian Church; the Church was affectionately called “Mother Church.” It was not until the 1600s that mere mortal mothers were also celebrated.

American settlers did not continue the tradition of their European forefathers and foremothers, for it went against their Puritan ideals. In America, it took war to promote love. In light of the Civil War, Julia Ward Howe planted the Mother’s Day seed in her 1870 Mother’s Day Proclamation. Anna Reeves Jarvis, the leader of a West Virginia women’s group, adapted Howe’s ideas to reunite divided Union and Confederate families. In order to honor her own mother, Anna M. Jarvis, the daughter of Anna Reeves, fought for the first official Mother’s Day celebration in 1908. In 1914, President Wilson deemed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
Whether it is celebrating “Dia de las Madres” in Mexico, “Yaum ul-umm” in Pakistan or “Materitse” in Yugoslavia, Mother’s Day has global appeal. Similar to the different translations and celebrations across the globe, CED has a unique selection of shapes, patterns, materials and stones for every mom. Like the roots of the holiday, CED jewelry focuses on the purest form of a piece to awaken the spirit. Our jewelry transcends the material, and it helps the wearer discover, express, and reveal their true self. Since the holiday that we celebrate today is a modern one, CED’s infinitely modern jewelry is the perfect gift for the modern mom.

It is not even summer yet and I cannot wait till Fall. Do you think it is too early to talk about what is on the runway for Fall 2012? Everything I see from Diane von Furstenberg strikes me because it is commands attention. Not only the silhouettes are feminine and minimal. Fabrics have texture paired with silky slinky layers. The color combinations are refreshing with a touch of surrealism in the mix. The divine Diane has done it again. Which makes me want to also run out and get a pair of those oh so long gloves. Okay well maybe a couple of pairs.

I’m sure many of our readers, like myself, are LA area locals. With summer approaching I was compiling a mental list of all the LA summer must-dos list when I got to thinking, what touristy things are there to do that many locals skip out on? This city is too great and has too much art, culture and sass to offer for anybody to be missing out on! Whether you’re an out of towner or a loud and proud local, make sure you cross these iconic gems off your checklist; even if you’ve seen them before, visit again, they can feel shiny and new.

We are attracted to similar things which cross mediums. If we like the color red we may like it in clothing as well as furniture. We see the world and draw connections. This influences my designs and it also influences the art I am drawn to. Here a recent discovery though I am not sure why I should be surprised, as it makes perfect sense. The aquamarine stone with its mirror cut allows us to see all the wonderful inclusions. The inclusions are a disturbance in purity but create interest and beauty, itself becomes a piece of art. I love the color it is calming and peaceful with the allure of the Caribbean blue waters. Here notice the artwork of one of Jennifer Perlmutter’s paintings, The Middle Way, the lines and the layers of materials and textures create depth enhanced by the color of aqua ties the two pieces together. No wonder it is one of my favorite new painting by Jennifer. Making connections in the ways we see things.

Going green is such a modern trend these days from luxury to economy brands. But really, who is going to be against saving our planet? It’s the only one we’ve got so we better take care of it. Sunday, April 22nd is Earth Day check out the website here, for things you can do and ways you can help. What started more than 40 years ago, triggered by an oil spill in Santa Barbara, has truly changed our world. By no means are we there yet but the idea is out there and now more than ever people are making efforts to attain this worthy goal. So let’s keep buying green products, keep recycling, keep advocating and raising awareness even by example. My parents always told me to leave things nicer than the way I found them, why should Earth be any different?
