Her Maui Ring

Maui Memories

If you have ever been to Maui, you may remember the beautiful shores and coves filled with tropical fish, the sun rays dashing in and out of clouds as they move across the sky, and the ever-changing colors of the water—from deep blue to turquoise. Even the leaves seem to have their own palette of greens.

My client has a condo directly on the shoreline. Waves break over the lava rocks, creating tide pools just beyond the lawn of her lanai. Her children snorkel in the turquoise waters just off Napili Bay.

For her, this is her happy place. A place where everything feels right with the world. Where the beauty and rhythm of nature bring a sense of peace and nurture her. Where she finds her center.

One of my designs inspired her to choose stones that reflected the colors and feeling of Maui. I selected Paraíba tourmaline for the waters, peridot for the leafy greens, and diamonds to represent the sun and the moon.

She wanted something that would bring a little piece of paradise with her when life in Los Angeles pulled her away from Maui.

She named it her “Maui Ring.”

I love that a piece of jewelry can hold a place, a feeling, and a memory. It can become a little reminder of where we feel most ourselves.

We also had the opportunity to solve another very personal challenge for her: finding a comfortable ring for an arthritic knuckle. Her knuckle is considerably larger than her ring size, making a traditional ring difficult to put on and take off.

An interior spring in this particular band allows it to expand over the knuckle and then gently adjust back to the smaller size of her finger. It can be especially helpful for hands that change size throughout the day or overnight. The bands are available in different widths, so they can be both practical and beautifully proportioned.

Sometimes custom jewelry is about creating something entirely new. And sometimes it is about finding a thoughtful solution that allows you to continue wearing the jewelry you love.

If you would like to talk about whether an adjustable band might be a good option for you, please reach out.

Aloha.
