Postcards from London
Inspired by an invitation to see Elton John at the London Palladium, I found myself on my way.
I was struck by how vibrant London is with the arts, culture, theater, pubs and clubs. It also has innovative modern architecture and high rises amongst the very old stately buildings. The architectural juxtaposition was visually interesting and technically spectacular which always provides me with inspiration.
We packed in a lot in a couple of days … so I will narrow it down to a few highlights.
The jewelry exhibit at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Jewels from ancient Rome through the middle ages and more recently contemporary examples of jewelry artists around the world. Here are a few of my favorites not only for their beauty but their craftsmanship and combination of materials
One cannot pass up the opportunity to at least see Buckingham Palace, from the outside. Sadly, Charles was otherwise occupied and could not grant us an audience.
Harrod’s Department store’s jewelry gallery of well known design houses, were definitely showing off their finest from rare Conch pearls, natural pearls, stunning green jade and of course diamonds. And it seems tiara’s are still in fashion.
Last but not least a visit to the Tower of London with its inner Keep displaying armor from Henry VIII as well as other royals. This fantastic example makes me wonder how long this took to engrave! The tower has a rich history from the Romans to William the Conqueror and has housed the Crown jewels since 1661. On display were a variety of crowns over the centuries set with rubies, sapphires, emeralds and diamonds, including one of the world's largest in the Imperial State Crown, 1937.
I’m looking forward to going back!
