Striking Jewels, A Hidden Gem

A "hidden gem" refers to things such as places, people, art, experience or ideas that are special, or noteworthy but not widely known, recognized and not easily found.

Here is one of my favorite hidden gems in Los Angeles that unceasingly influences me.

The house at Barnsdall Art Park, perched atop Olive Hill, is truly a hidden jewel in Los Angeles. Nestled just west of the Crossroads of Hollywood and Sunset, it’s partially concealed—on one side by olive trees, on the other by a quiet pine grove. From its living room, balcony, and grassy grounds, you’re treated to spectacular views stretching across the Hollywood Hills, Silver Lake, and all the way to Century City.

Hollyhock House

Named the Hollyhock House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for theatrical performer Aline Barnsdall, features dramatic lines, striking vistas, and reflective pools—fitting for a woman of the stage. It stands as a perfect example of Wright’s architectural transition from the East Coast Prairie style to his West Coast exploration of patterned concrete. His signature use of repetitive patterns and geometric, nature-inspired motifs—here, the hollyhock stalk—creates a powerful visual impact. Once again, Wright masterfully brings the outdoors in, an homage to the California lifestyle and its inviting climate.

I find myself returning to this hilltop gem time and again, marveling at the intentional ways light enters and moves through the space. Wright’s work continues to inspire me.

A Striking Statement with Repurposed Diamonds

A repurposed oval diamond is reset in our parallel linear setting with an east-west bezel setting where the stone lies horizontally across the finger. A contemporary contrast to the original traditional north-south setting. In this new design, the diamond appears larger, elevated almost like a gem on a pedestal. Angled details from every side create architectural interest and allow light to illuminate the design beautifully.

Diamonds removed from individual bands are now united in one bold, wider band. A striking statement—whether worn alone or stacked together. All are set in timeless platinum.

May you discover some hidden jewels and inspired illumination of your own.

xoxo
