In the world of jewelry, there’s bling and then there’s BLING. Some of my favorite pieces are the most improbable – the bold statements that just demand attention, the gems that are unapologetic in their brilliance. When working in precious gems, like diamonds, these custom projects are usually a rare treat given the cost of the stone and choice of metal.

But I got lucky this year, and so did my client’s wife, whom he wanted to give a grand gesture. He jokingly referred to his vision as a “lifetime achievement” award, in the form of a stunning pendant with a breathtaking 6.02ct radiant cut diamond as the showpiece. I just loved his joie de vivre and how he wanted to acknowledge her love and support in such a beautiful way.

But when the diamond arrived, his wife found she really could not take her eyes off of it. Rightfully mesmerized by its incredible radiance, she opted for a custom modern ring design.

We went through a number of different sketches and iterations to get the design just right.

They both wanted to see as much of the stone as possible without compromising the structure – and delicacy was not a design move that suited them, nor the stone – so we opted for a half bezel. When working with a stone with so much personality, often elegant minimalism is the way to go.

Ultimately my clients made a design direction choice that would allow her to take in the diamond’s beauty and see it catch the light with every move of her hand. And I do not blame her one bit. Just look at that sparkle.
